TTK Network

Fiber optic lines which run along all the mainline railways are of over 53,000 kilometers in total length. BDCN covers all the densely populated part of the Russian territory and links up western and eastern areas of the country. The Backbone Digital Network has over 1000 resource allocation points in all regions of the country which account for 90 per cent of the population and accommodate all the main production facilities of Russia.

The high reliability of the network is ensured by the reservation of fiber optic communication lines for geographically spread routs and by the efficient operation system for line-cable structures.

Connection points with the networks of foreign operators make it possible to create an affective environment for exchange of international operators’ traffic.

The services are rendered through TTK network; it comprises the Backbone Digital Communications Network of Russian Railways built up and operated by TTK as well as MPLS IP network based on BDCN resources and access networks integrated into one interlinked multiservice network system.

SDH technology (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) has been chosen as the basic for setting up the backbone primary network; it ensures the required scalability (2 – 10,000 Mbps) both in terms of capacity and zone coverage and enables the most effective operation of optical channels.

The network uses SDH multiplexers provided predominantly by Lucent Technologies; they are capable of multiplexing the standard PDH and SDH signals to 2.5 Gbps level (STM-16). A wide range of covered distances, high capacity and connection flexibility make the SDH equipment the key component of effective and economical backbone networks.

The combination of the equipment used with the SDH technology enables increasing the primary traffic network reliability by means of integrating its units into ring configurations; that allows the network control system automatically to switch main channel to alternate channel in case of the deviations of the main channel quality parameters from the standard. Switching the channel in the network takes no more than 50 ms which means no interruption for the user.

TTK has implementated DWDM technology into its network. Due to that improvement, the network capacity has grown from 2.5 Gbps to 50 Gbps, however with the further traffic growth, the capacity may be increased up to 400 Gbps.
